Course Name: Basic Scaffold Competency and Inspection: System Scaffold

 

Duration: 8 Hours (usually two evening classes one week apart, see schedule)

 

Course Description:

This course covers the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety code, and CSA standards as they apply to System scaffold. Students are taught how to systematically inspect a scaffold for compliance with codes and standards and the industries best practices.

Students will become familiar with industry terminology, standard scaffold components and specialty components, loads on scaffolds, stability and ties, the height to base ratio, rolling scaffold, accessing a scaffold and will participate in a practical in which several compliant scaffolds are erected and appropriately tagged.

Course material was developed for the Scaffold Industry Association by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and is competency based. Students are given a copy of the course material to read and review. Inexperienced students will need to spend more time reviewing the course material than students that have worked regularly with system scaffold.

Seventy percent is required on a muliple choice written exam and successful students receive a certificate and wallet card from the Scaffold Industry Association (SIA) which is valid for three years.

This course can be offered independently in 8 hours or as an add-on to a Frame class in 4 hours.
